- How can I get to know my neighbors better on EveryBlock?
-
Tell your neighbors a little bit about yourself by making sure you’ve uploaded a profile photo, short bio and completed your profile page. You can do this by selecting the You menu in the top-right corner of the page and selecting “Manage profile.” (Make sure you're logged in first.)
Once you’ve completed your profile, the best way to get to know your neighbors is to dive into the conversation. Post comments on news items or existing neighbor messages, and post your own neighbor messages if you have specific topics in mind or messages you’d like to share.
- How can I get to the next level of neighborhood honors?
-
Neighborhood honors are achieved by completing various activities on EveryBlock. If you’re a new member, you automatically receive the title of “neighbor.” From then on, follow the guidelines on our neighborhood honors page to gain honors.
- Invite your friends
-
Since EveryBlock just isn’t the same without the people who bring your neighborhood to life, we’ve made it even easier for you to invite your friends and neighbors to sign up.
Our previous “invite your friends” feature required you to cut and paste or manually enter the email addresses you wanted to include in your invitation. Now, you can add friends from your Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo! or other address books with just a few clicks.
To access the “invite your friends” page, click on the account tab in the right corner of any EveryBlock page and you’ll see a link at the top of the list. You can use the pre-written message or customize your own message and include links to EveryBlock pages of interest (like a interesting neighbor message or juicy media mention about the neighborhood).
EveryBlock gets even better as more neighbors come on board, so don't be shy about helping us spread the word.
Posting messages and events
- Post a message on EveryBlock
-
If you’re logged into our site, you can either post your message directly from the box at the top of your EveryBlock homepage or from the “start a discussion” link in the top navigation.
Once you enter your headline and message, you’ll be asked to select from of your followed places. If you’d like to post a message to a location you don’t follow, search for it in the search box.
Please note that we ask neighbors to avoid posting the same message to multiple locations. Read our comment policy for more.
After you post, you’ll have 10 minutes to remove it, in case of errors.
- Post an event on EveryBlock
-
If you’re logged into our site, you can either post your event directly from the box at the top of your EveryBlock homepage. When you start to type, click the "Event" tab and fill in the appropriate information. You can also post and event from the “start a discussion” link in the top navigation; when you click that link you'll seen an option to post an event.
Once you enter your event information, you’ll be asked to select from of your followed places. If you’d like to post an event to a location you don’t follow, search for it in the search box.

- Send a private message
-
To turn on this feature, click on your account tab in the right corner of the page and select “manage e-mails.” Then, look for the “connecting with your neighbors” heading and mark the checkbox. (We have turned this option off by default for all our existing users because we didn’t want to catch anyone by surprise.)
If you’d like to send an EveryBlock neighbor an e-mail message, first go to his or her profile page. If your neighbor has enabled this feature, you’ll see “send e-mail” in the right side.
- Promoting your local business on EveryBlock?
-
Please don’t post overly promotional messages on EveryBlock. But if residents are already discussing your business, feel free to jump in, join the conversation or answer their questions. For more information about advertising opportunities on EveryBlock, contact brian@everyblock.com.
Interacting with EveryBlock neighbors
- Give a "Thanks"
-
Like what you see? Thank your neighbors for their contributions.
The EveryBlock "thanks" feature is a handy way to show your neighbors they're appreciated. Every time you thank someone using the link next to their comment, that neighbor will get notified of the appreciation, and their honors status will increase a bit, as will yours.
Of course, if you have something to add to the discussion, post a comment too.
- Mute, hide thread, report
-
Don’t like what you see? You have options! If someone’s responses are rubbing you the wrong way but they haven’t violated the EveryBlock guidelines, you can Mute them. Simply hover over any user’s comment or message on the site, and you’ll see an option to mute them (along with the ability to report their comment or hide the entire discussion from your timeline).
You will never see neighbor messages from muted users, and their comments on other discussions will be hidden from view. If you would like to read a comment from a muted user, you can expand it and read it without unmuting them.
Never want to see this thread again? Hide will take care of that.
If a discussion or user’s getting out of hand and violating the EveryBlock community guidelines, use the “Report” link, and the moderators will see that the comment has been reported.
